Established in 1798, The Blue Bell is York’s smallest and most beautiful pub. Last decorated in 1903 and retaining all of it’s Edwardian charm, a drink in The Blue Bell is a step back in time.

For beer and pub lovers alike, no trip to York is complete without a pilgrimage to The Blue Bell. It's an acquired taste - and certainly not for everyone - but if you want to step back in time, behave yourself like an Edwardian gentleman and enjoy the best pint of cask conditioned real ale in York, this spot is for you.

Cask Ales & Pies

Our very own Master Cellarman takes great pride in the preparation and serving of The Blue Bell’s cask conditioned ales. We have five permanent beers to choose from and take great care in sourcing guest ales of varying styles throughout the year.

House Rules

“Why does a pub need rules?!” is one of the most-asked questions at The Blue Bell. The answer takes us all the way back to 1902 where the manager, Harry Hayes was dismissed by the pub’s owners for landing himself in court three times in one month for bad behaviour, drunkenness and non-payment of rent. The owners – CJ Melrose & Co – installed a new Landlord and Landlady called George and Annie Robinson in January 1903 who, along with their daughter Edith ran the pub until 1992.
